Living in Upminister area information and guide

Upminister area overview

Upminster in east London is a suburban district at the point where London opens up into the countryside. Historically it was a rural Essex village but expanded with the arrival of the railways in 1885. Today it has a tube station which is the terminus of the District line. This takes passengers into Embankment in 50 minutes. As with most of the wider district, Upminster changed during the industrial revolution from farming to a garden suburb. The quickest growth happened in the inter war period and it became part of Hornchurch Urban District in 1934, and has been part of London since the 1960s.
