Living in Highgate area information and guide

Highgate area overview

Highgate in north London sits across Hampstead Heath from Hampstead. It's on a hill so there are some fantastic views. It also has the distinction of being the area of London with the highest proportion of residents with a higher education degree. It is a very fancy area with a lovely cafe culture centred around highgate Square. It's on the northern Line in zone 3 so it has excellent access to the city and the west end. Highgate has substantial architectural heritage much of which is Georgian (including many shops, pubs, restaurants and residential streets) but there are also much older building including Highgate School (1565) and the Gatehouse Inn (1670).
