Dagenham is a large suburban area of east London. Like many of the surrounding areas it feels very more a part of Essex than London. Perhaps the thing for which Dagenham is most famous is the Ford car plant which has dominated much of the local economy since the 1930's. Vehicle assembly stopped in 2002 after which it specialised in engines. The area has suffered from continued downscaling of manufacturing operations but the southern part of Dagenham is now part of the Thames Gateway redevelopment area so will be receiving capital investment for regeneration.
